Find the perfect travel insurance policy

المتاجرة باسهم الذهب It doesn’t matter whether you’re adventuring in The Algarve or swimming in Sicily. Just like your passport and your camera, good travel insurance is an essential item for your holiday. But with so many offers out there, how do you know who to insure with? Well, you can take the tribulation out of travel insurance by knowing what to look for on your policy.

Medical cover

The most important aspect of any travel insurance policy is the medical cover. Without it you could be left severely out of pocket if you need to pay for unexpected medical treatment while you’re abroad. It’s not uncommon for foreign medical bills to stretch into thousands of pounds. But with good medical cover, you’ll be protected.

Already travelling with a medical condition?

Not many people know that failing to declare pre-existing medical conditions to your travel insurer could invalidate your entire policy. The trouble is, many insurers will inflate your premium for insuring your condition. They may even refuse to cover you altogether, especially if your condition is seen as ‘high risk’. However, you don’t have to break the bank. And you don’t have to travel underinsured. There are insurers out there who will give you specialist cover at a price that’s fair. We’re one of them.

Taking the grandchildren with you?

What better way to enjoy some precious time with the grandchildren than whisking them off on holiday? Many insurers will offer family travel insurance where you can insure everyone in your group on one policy. It’s usually a great way to save money, which means you’ll have more to spend while you’re away. Perfect.

Cancellation cover

Have you ever considered what might happen if you had to cancel a holiday at the last minute? You could lose a fortune on pre-booked costs, such as flights and accommodation. Cancellation cover is there to make sure that doesn’t happen. The thing to look out for when comparing policies is that the maximum payout covers the cost of your holiday. Beware of high excesses too. There’s no point in claiming if it’s going to cost you a fortune to do so!

You’re entitled to your money back

Remember, your travel insurer is legally obliged to give you a fourteen day period from the date you purchase your policy where you can cancel your cover and get a full refund. So if you change your mind after you go through the small print on your policy documents, you won’t be left out of pocket. And don’t let your insurer tell you otherwise. Hit the ground running with the FCO

The British Foreign & Commonwealth Office website has a special advice section where you can get up to date safety information and travel tips that are specific to your destination. Is the water safe to drink? Are there any vaccinations you need to stay in tip top condition while you’re on holiday? Can you trust the local taxi drivers? FCO website will tell you.

Protect your valuables!

It doesn’t matter how hard we try, we Brits are hardly the most inconspicuous travellers. To locals of foreign countries, we generally stick out like a sore thumb. That means if you’re travelling anywhere that is quite densely populated, it’s important to take a few simple steps to help ward off petty criminals.

Carry only the essential amount of cash you need to get by. Many places, especially in Europe, now accept British credit and debit cards as payment. And if you run out of cash there’s always the hole in the wall, just like home. Also, be sensible about how your carry your valuables. Wandering around with your Nikon slung casually over your shoulder might make it easy to catch that killer holiday snap. But it also makes it easy for a thief to run off with your prized possession. Carry valuables in handbags worn across your shoulder and be mindful of leaving your mobile phone, camera or passport on the table when you sit down for a bite to eat and a refreshing cuppa. It’s all common sense, isn’t it?
