This happens quite a lot in this road as we have long gardens. Most of them have people who they know of. One lady whose husband recently died has a chap in to "do" her garden and he is able to take any produce he wants. She spends more time chatting with him than he does gardening!
Quite a few are older people who are now in flats and miss their gardens. You could always advertise in your local paper to see if you have a response. you can always say "no" if the person doesnt appeal to you.
