Default Myth of the 8-hr sleep

BBC News reports today that lying awake in the middle of the night may actually be good for you.

Grannynet comment: Can this be true? Do you feel better for a broken night's sleep?

Intereresting!!
I hope it is good for you. I can't remember when I last slept through the night. Years ago now!

I rarely sleep right through the night, I wish I could. Not helped by me falling asleep in front of the TV about 9 pm I am sure. When I am having a busy week (like now) I wake up worrying that I have forgotten something for an event or meeting.

I rather like the idea of when I am awake I can pop to the loo, have a 'fag' and pop in to see a neighbour.
Now which neighbour should I choose?

I've just read this article, and notice there's no mention of babies or teenagers. I distinctly recall being able to sleep for up to twelve hours when I was a teenager (if allowed!).

These days I'm lucky if I get a four hour stretch in one go, and even if I don't want to wake up, I just have to go to the loo....

Two sleeps a night would be OK in theory, but what about those of us who have trouble getting to sleep in the first place?

Default sleep

It is interesting, the article is on BCC (internet) I sleep for about 3hrs then wake, but I listen to my radio, I have a cunning device which is under my pillow so I don't wake OH and I doze of listening to World Radio.

I never slept through the night as far as I can remember. As a child yes and teenagers, this is the growth time for the brain, so we must not deny them this time. But shall watch for more research.

tizzy - Have you got a notepad by your bed - even if you jot down utter and complete gibberish (and I'm not suggesting you would!!) you will find it easier to go back to sleep if you've jotted down "check x, y & z".

lol - Jane - I should have read the article before your post!!! I was thinking "how strange! Jane has very odd sleeping habits". Sorry I misjudged you.

Do you think as a lot of us are retired we dont use up as much energy so dont need as much sleep. Going to the loo 3 times a night these days dont even open my eyes now its a talent I have nurtured!
