I often travel by bus when on my own as I don't drive, and even when I was younger, I would always find older men (often old enough to be my father!) trying to offer me a seat....now what do you do? Do you refuse and make them feel really old or do you accept graciously knowing they need the seat much more that you do...?

now that's a difficult one! Nannyviolet.
I'd say help them keep their pride , and think they wouldn't offer if they really couldn't manage.
But still it would be hard to sit there comfortably.

I would never turn down a seat that's been offered to me, even if I suspected they needed it more than I did.

Tinker - I opened a shop door today for two young lads (about 12/13 I'd guess) just because the door opened toward me and it was easier. I was pleasantly pleased when they both very politely thanked me. A little later on the way out, we were approaching the door with a family with 2 boys of about 8/9 and one of them opened the door and held it for a family with a baby buggy coming in. They said thank you, too. It was all very nice.

I'd read the comments about OHs who walk on the outside of the pavement, and to my shame, I didn't know if my OH does this or not!!! It's not something I'd notice. Anyway, today when we were shopping, I did notice, and I'm delighted to report that he did always walk on the outside!

JG, I've been trying to remember if my Hubby does that too, and I think he does. We usually hold hands , and he does swap about a bit, didn't give a thought as to why. But he does always hold the door for me and others. I'm so used to it, I stand back to let him, but do say thank you.
