They found that nearly 1/5th were grossly or heavily contaminated with a mixture of skin and faecal bacteria and 89% had some form of contamination with bacteria. The tests were run on a sample of 70 soothers both in use by children and new ones dropped in a range of environments to see the types and numbers of germs babies are exposed to daily.
here 11% of the sample gave levels of bacteria that were very low, with no bacteria growing after incubation. The soothers were collected from healthy babies across a wide age range and sent to the Queen Mary University of London laboratory for testing where they were incubated for five days to measure full bacteria load. Relatively speaking the least contamination was found on the soothers dropped on the pavement and in Mums changing bag whereas the most germ filled were those from the soft play centre and the kitchen floor.

Dr Ronald Cutler who headed the research added: “The good news is most mothers are following great hygiene practises. Our research showed a minority of the sample soothers showed a heavy or gross contamination when dropped. When these practices are not maintained, soothers can become contaminated with very high levels of organisms which could cause stomach upsets”.
