Ask Jackie: looking for support as a kinship carer

Created by Jackie Highe in Ask Jackie

Q: Hi Jackie, I have just joined Grannynet. I have got my granddaughter via residency order and:

1. Although she goes to pre-school a few days a week, I am struggling to get to know people in similar situation with whom I could meet, make friends and also share experiences. I live in Milton Keynes.

2. Is there any financial help for grandparents? I work and am at a bracket where I can’t get work tax credit but still have to pay extra hours for pre-school.

3. My granddaughter is such a delight and keeps my spirits high.

Can you help? Thanks.

A: If you look in your local public library or the front of your phonebook you should find lists of support groups and might come across something that appeals to you.

Here are some contacts:

Family Rights Group

Advice line 08007311696

They have a booklet on grandparents raising their grandchildren

Age Concern

Also take a read of Grannynet’s article Grandparents rights and refer to the heading Grandparents Networks

As for financial help, it’s a knotty area. Talk to your local Citizen’s advice bureau – their number is in the phonebook. And approach your local authority benefit office and ask them what’s available.
