Adult Education: We're never too old to learn

By Lorna Edwards

Helping to look after the grandchildren is very rewarding, but it doesn't always satisfy the "whole you". Your spare time will be precious so it is often a good idea to plan something that is just for you.

We are always encouraged to take up a new hobby. It keeps our brains active, its great for stress relief, and it can be fun. It could be a physically challenging activity such as joining the gym, or enrolling in an evening class such as Pilates or Yoga. If it's something that is new to you, ask for an introductory session before committing yourself to that class. Local council internet sites have a list of possible classes to attend, you can scan your local newsagent's notice board or even visit the local library.

However, if you feel that looking after your grandchildren is exercise enough, then learning a new language or taking a G.C.S.E. in a subject is another alternative. Again local council internet sites offer information as to where the courses are run and the level that they cover. Learning a new language or even improving on one requires a lot of commitment and practice and what better audience can there be than your grandchild? Together you can practice new phrases without feeling embarrassed. Check out your local library and borrow an interactive language CD. Planning a well-earned holiday may also motivate you to complete the course.

Once you have made up your mind as to what you want to do, go on line and, using a search engine such as Google, Yahoo or Msn, type in your area, and then 'evening classes'. That will bring up a range of choices from part-time and evening courses to those taking place over the weekend or short term. Some have a contact number and you can ring for a brochure. Otherwise it can all be found online, from a list of possible courses to enrolment. HotCourses.com is a well set out national site that allows you to search for courses, read unbiased reviews and compare them. Some councils offer courses with fee concessions for the over 60's. Direct.gov.uk is another useful site for learning online. There is a contact number if you find it easier to talk to an advisor.

It might be that you would like to improve on a talent such as painting, upholstery or home decorating. Sharing ideas often leads to new friends and a renewed interest. Gardening is one such activity that continues to develop. Everyone seems to have their own ideas on how to make things grow, so going to gardening workshops or local talks about specific plants helps to increase our knowledge. The bbc.co.uk local community site lists local gardens and parks to be visited.

There is so much choice these days. Whilst searching the Internet, you will find ideas such as sailing, health and safety, learning to play an instrument and cookery are all there. So go on line and see what attracts your interest .
